How can I be sure the backstitch detail I'm stitching on a design won't pucker my fabric?

Your fabric will only pucker if you work the backstitch too tightly. To prevent this happening make sure you work the backstitch whilst your fabric is held taut within a hoop. This will enable each backstitch to be pulled flat to the aida or evenweave.
